What is Toshogu?
Toshogu Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. There are Toshogu shrines all over Japan, with the most famous one being Nikko Toshogu. Since Nikko Toshogu is a popular destination for travelers in the Tokyo area, many people have likely visited it. Nagoya Toshogu Shrine was built within the grounds of Nagoya Castle in 1619, relocated to its current location in 1875, and was destroyed in the American air raids of 1945. The main hall and the Kara-mon gate were relocated from the mausoleum of Tokugawa Yoshinao’s wife, Kogen-in, which was originally built in 1651. The main hall is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Aichi Prefecture.
Nagoya Toshogu is Hidden Sakura place in Nagoya
Nagoya Toshogu is a hidden cherry blossom spot. I visited in April 2024, and it was wonderful—quiet and with few people around.
Although you can’t go beyond the Kara-mon gate, I was able to take a picture of the main hall, so I took one.
Cherry trees are also planted along the street on the west side of Toshogu Shrine. In the background of the photo, you can see the Nagoya City Science Museum, creating a nice view.
