What is Toshogu?

Toshogu Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. There are Toshogu shrines all over Japan, with the most famous one being Nikko Toshogu. Since Nikko Toshogu is a popular destination for travelers in the Tokyo area, many people have likely visited it. Nagoya Toshogu Shrine was built within the grounds of Nagoya Castle in 1619, relocated to its current location in 1875, and was destroyed in the American air raids of 1945. The main hall and the Kara-mon gate were relocated from the mausoleum of Tokugawa Yoshinao’s wife, Kogen-in, which was originally built in 1651. The main hall is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Aichi Prefecture.
