What is Naya bridge?
Naya bridge which straddles between Nagoya station area and Sakae area is regarded as seven old bridges of Horita canal. Naya bridge was originally built for transporting construction materials to Nagoya castle in the early 1600s. Since then it has been rebuilt several times and finally rebuilt in 1981 but its design remained as the previous one in the 1900s. Naya bridge was designated as an important historical construction by Nagoya city.
Former Kato Shokai building
Former Kato Shokai building next to the Naya bridge is also a historical construction in Nagoya city. Even though this area was completely destroyed by U.S. air raids in 1945, Former Kato Shokai building could avoid destruction and remain as it used to. This building was built in 1915 and then used as the embassy of Thailand. Today, the first and second floor is a Thai food restaurant called Siam Garden and the basement is a gallery.
Everyone can enter this gallery without payment. I went there in 2023 and at that moment, the Horita canal project was shown. Nagoya city has been trying to make this area a sightseeing spot like Doton bori In Osaka for more decay. The Horita canal projects displayed their plans that many cafes and restaurants along with the canal and many people interacting with each other. However, this area is a little bit far from Nagoya station and Fushimi station and also the red light district still remains. That can keep away many tourists and locals.
