What is Tanabata festival?
Tanabata, or the star festival, is a popular festival celebrating an ancient Chinese legend about star-crossed lovers, Altair and Vega. In Japan, these two stars are called Orihime and Hikoboshi. According to the Chinese legend, the lovers are separated by the Milky Way, and can only meet on one night a year in summer. To give accurate information, Orihime and Hikoboshi are said to meet on July 7th. However, since it’s the rainy season in Japan, holding festivals on July 7th isn’t practical. Therefore, Tanabata festivals are often held from the end of July to the beginning of August.
Endoji Shopping Street
The Endoji Shopping Street’s Tanabata Festival is also held from the end of July to the beginning of August. A distinctive feature is the Tanabata decorations hanging from the arcade ceiling. Inside the arcade, there are many stalls where you can enjoy a variety of foods.
