About Chunichi Building
When it comes to landmarks in Sakae, Nagoya, the TV Tower is iconic. However, there’s another symbol you shouldn’t forget: the Chunichi Building. “Chunichi” refers to the Chunichi Shimbun, a newspaper company based in Nagoya. The Chunichi Shimbun (more precisely, its subsidiary) is the operator of the Chunichi Building. This building was constructed in 1966 and has been one of the symbols of Sakae, Nagoya for over half a century. Due to aging, the building was closed in 2019. The newly rebuilt Chunichi Building opened on April 23, 2024.
Blue bottle coffee
One of the highlights of the rebuilt Chunichi Building is Blue Bottle Coffee. Many people might be familiar with this coffee chain from California, USA. In fact, this is its first location in Nagoya city. Nagoya’s Sakae area has many Starbucks and Japanese coffee chains, so I thought Blue Bottle Coffee might struggle. However, it has become so popular that there are lines of people waiting to order every day. When I went for a coffee, I waited in line for about 40 minutes.
The interior of the café, designed by Seiji Ashizawa, has a calm atmosphere. There are more than 60 seats available.
The menu photo is above. According to the staff, the top recommendation is the Pudding à la Mode. It’s a popular item available in limited quantities.
I ordered the blended coffee.
