I recently visited 豆花甘露(Mamehana kanro), a Taiwanese café located about a five-minute walk from Aratamabashi Station in Nagoya.
This café is a rare spot in Nagoya where you can enjoy douhua, a traditional Taiwanese dessert made from soft tofu. Taiwanese cafés themselves are still limited in Nagoya, and places specializing in douhua are even more uncommon. The café opened in 2023, so it still feels fresh and new.

I stopped by on a weekday evening just before closing time. Despite the late hour, there were four other customers, which gave me the impression that this café is already well-loved by locals.
The café is small but very clean, with a calm and relaxing atmosphere. Soft classical music was playing in the background, making it an ideal place to slow down and enjoy a quiet moment.

Since I specifically wanted to try douhua, I ordered the classic douhua for 800 yen along with a cup of Taiwanese high-mountain tea for 500 yen. One of the highlights is that you can choose five different toppings for the douhua. I selected tapioca pearls, black rice, red beans, peanuts, and one additional topping whose name I unfortunately forgot.

This was my first time trying douhua. It is soft tofu topped with a lightly sweet syrup, and the flavor is very gentle and refreshing. It is completely different from Western cakes or even traditional Japanese sweets. The red bean topping tastes quite similar to Japanese-style sweet azuki, which makes the dessert easy to enjoy for Japanese visitors. By changing the toppings with each bite, you can enjoy different textures and flavors without getting bored.

The Taiwanese high-mountain tea left an even stronger impression on me than the dessert. It reminded me of a very aromatic Japanese green tea, but with a cleaner and more refreshing taste. The tea leaves are served in a teapot and can be reused about three times. If you ask the staff, they will kindly refill the hot water for you, allowing you to enjoy the tea at a relaxed pace.
There are not many Taiwanese cafés in Nagoya, and this one is located away from the city center, making it a true hidden gem. It is highly recommended for anyone who wants to enjoy authentic Taiwanese sweets and tea in a quiet, peaceful setting rather than a busy café.
