Oldest matcha shop in Nagoya
Masuhan Chaten, founded in 1840, is a historic tea shop in Nagoya’s Fushimi area. It offers high-quality Uji matcha and traditional Japanese sweets. In 2023, it reopened with a café serving matcha desserts and drinks, preserving its legacy while embracing modern tastes.
Traditional tea room
Since it’s a popular shop, I avoided the weekend and went to Masuhan Chaten around 2 p.m. on a weekday. It’s about a 10-minute walk from Fushimi Station. The shop was renovated in 2023 and looks very clean and modern. On the left side as you enter, there is a traditional tea room. It seems that tea ceremony events are held there.
On the right side of the shop, there is a small café space. It’s not very spacious, but there’s a counter, so even if you come alone, you can feel comfortable.
Origami decorations are placed on the shelf.
The menu had so many options that it was hard to choose, but I decided on matcha ice cream and a hojicha latte. The matcha ice cream was rich yet had a clean aftertaste—it was delicious. The hojicha latte had a nice roasted flavor. Everything on the menu looked tasty, so I’d love to visit again.
