Discovering Sokaku-ji Temple in Nagoya

While walking from Higashi Betsuin in Nagoya, I happened to come across a small temple tucked away along the street. The sign outside told me it was called Sokaku-ji Temple, and it even had a board explaining its history provided by the city of Nagoya. From that, I learned it is a temple with deep historical roots.

The highlight of the grounds is the main hall, built in 1866, which is officially registered as a tangible cultural property. Though the temple itself is quite small, the garden is carefully maintained. The neat stone paths and greenery create a calm, almost sacred atmosphere.
I didn’t go inside the main hall but was allowed to take some photos of the building from outside. Even in its simplicity, the temple gave off a sense of quiet dignity.
Looking around, I couldn’t help but imagine how beautiful this temple must be in the autumn. I plan to return in late November to see the autumn leaves, which I’m sure will add even more charm to this hidden spot.
If you enjoy discovering peaceful historical places off the beaten path, Sokaku-ji Temple is worth a visit while exploring Nagoya.
