About Kamon

As I’ve written many times on this blog, Nagoya has very few historical buildings. This is because the city center was destroyed by American air raids during World War II. On this day, I was taking a walk from Marunouchi towards Shikemichi when I came across an old building. Since I didn’t know what it was due to my lack of knowledge, I looked it up and found out that it was a restaurant called Kamon. It was founded about 400 years ago as a fish shop. Later, during the Edo period, it continued to operate as a high-end restaurant. After the Meiji Restoration, it was used by politicians and dignitaries from various countries. In 2019, it was the venue for a dinner party held during the G20 summit in Nagoya.

The restaurant seems quite high-end, but it is also used by the general public for occasions like wedding dinners and celebrations. When walking around Nagoya, you occasionally come across old buildings, and researching these buildings and their histories can be quite interesting.
