The residence of the founder of the Toyota Group

Sakichi Toyoda’s House is located in the Cultural Path (Bunka no Michi) area of Nagoya. Sakichi Toyoda (1867–1930) was the founder of the Toyota Group and an important inventor in Japan. He is known for developing automatic looms, which later led to the creation of Toyota Motor Corporation.

The house was built in 1923 and shows a mix of Western and Japanese architectural styles. It has tatami rooms, wooden sliding doors, and a Western-style reception room. The house reflects the time when Japan was modernizing.

Today, the house is open to the public as a historical site. Visitors can see the furniture, old looms, and displays about Sakichi Toyoda’s inventions. The house is part of a walking course in the Cultural Path area, where you can explore other historical buildings such as Futaba museum and Shumoku Museum.

If you are interested in Japanese history, industry, or Toyota’s beginnings, this house is a great place to visit.

I visited Sakichi Toyoda’s House on March 22, 2025. I stopped by after seeing the Ōkanzakura cherry blossoms, which were in full bloom nearby.

This residence is open to the public for free. Since maintenance costs must be high, I feel they could charge an entrance fee.

The house itself is not very large. Shumokukan and Futabakan are more impressive, with better exhibitions.

It seems that having a Western-style room was a kind of status symbol for successful people in this area during that time. The layout of Sakichi Toyoda’s House is similar to Shumokukan and Futabakan, which makes it interesting to compare them.

I’m not sure if the staff can speak English, but there is an English pamphlet at the entrance. The pamphlet provides most of the historical information about the building.

This area has several interesting historic buildings, but since it’s in Nagoya, many tourists skip it. As a result, it remains relatively quiet.

It’s a great place for a peaceful walk, so if you visit Nagoya, I recommend stopping by.
