About Eikokuji Temple
Eikokuji is a small temple located about a 10-minute walk from Higashi Betsuin. Before this temple was built around 1660, the site was a place of execution where over 200 Christians were put to death. A memorial tower was erected by Mitsutomo Tokugawa, the second lord of the Owari Domain, who led the executions of Christians at that time. Later, Saikokuji Temple was built on this site.
This temple is tucked away near Higashi Betsuin and isn’t a well-known tourist spot. Within the temple grounds, there is a kindergarten and a small museum.
Eikokuji is located near Higashi Betsuin, and if you continue further west, you’ll find Nishi Betsuin. If you get off at Higashi Betsuin Station and visit Higashi Betsuin, Eikokuji, and Nishi Betsuin while walking, it will take about an hour and a half. This area is recommended because it has some of the few remaining historical buildings in Nagoya.
