About Kakuozan
Kakuozan is famous for its nostalgic, old-town atmosphere centered around Nittai-ji Temple. The central temple, Nittai-ji, is a Buddhist temple that preserves the ashes of the Buddha, which were sent from Thailand. I hear that Thai residents in Nagoya often visit Nittai-ji to pay their respects.
The street leading from Kakuozan Station to Nittai-ji is lined with various shops catering to temple visitors, making it an interesting walk.
Eikokuya, a famous shop on this street, is housed in an old Japanese-style building, giving it a nostalgic atmosphere. I visited during lunchtime on a weekday, but since it’s a popular spot, it was nearly full.
You can get the lunch set until 2 p.m., which offers the best value. You can choose a curry and a drink for 950 yen. There were several types of curry, but I went with the chicken curry. You can also choose between naan and rice; I chose rice. Since it’s an Indian curry, I picked a lassi for my drink after the meal. The chicken curry is simmered until the vegetables have practically dissolved, giving it a rich depth of flavor. It’s not too spicy, either.
The lassi after the meal isn’t very sweet—lighter compared to those at other Indian curry places. I added a bit of sweetness with some syrup.
